How To Take Care Of Your Swimwear
Share
Swimwear is more than just clothing—it’s an expression of confidence, style, and freedom. Whether you're lounging by the pool, soaking up the sun on a beach getaway, or swimming laps at your local gym, your swimwear works hard to keep you looking and feeling your best. With the right care, your favorite pieces can last season after season. Here’s how to give your swimwear the love it deserves.
1. Rinse Immediately After Use
Chlorine, saltwater, sunscreen, and body oils can all damage your swimsuit’s fabric. As soon as you're done swimming, rinse your swimwear with cool, fresh water. This simple step helps remove chemicals and salt before they can settle into the fabric and cause fading or breakdown.
2. Wash Gently By Hand
Avoid throwing your swimwear in the washing machine, even on a delicate cycle. Instead, hand wash it using cold water and a gentle detergent. Harsh soaps and machine agitation can weaken the fibers and stretch out elastic. A mild soap or a special swimwear detergent will keep the material soft and the colors vibrant.
3. Don’t Wring It Out
It might be tempting to twist and wring your swimsuit to get the water out, but doing so can damage the shape and elasticity. Instead, press your suit gently between two clean towels to absorb excess water, then lay it flat to dry.
4. Air Dry Only
Heat is one of the biggest enemies of swimwear. Avoid dryers, direct sunlight, or hanging your suit on rough surfaces. Lay your swimsuit flat in a shaded area to dry naturally. This prevents fading, stretching, and fabric wear, keeping your pieces looking new for longer.
5. Rotate Your Swimwear
If you swim regularly, give your swimsuits a break by rotating them. Elastic fibers need time to recover between wears. Having a few suits in rotation will help each one last longer and retain its shape.
6. Avoid Rough Surfaces
Sitting or leaning on rough pool decks or concrete can snag and damage the fabric of your suit. Always place a towel down first to protect your swimwear from unnecessary wear and tear.
7. Store Properly
Once completely dry, store your swimsuit flat in a drawer or gently folded. Avoid stuffing it into bags or keeping it in damp areas, as this can lead to mildew or unwanted creases.
8. Watch Out for Hot Tubs
High heat and strong chemicals in hot tubs can be particularly harsh on swimwear. If you wear a swimsuit in a hot tub, rinse and wash it as soon as possible afterward to limit damage.
By following these simple steps, you can extend the life of your swimwear and keep it looking beautiful all year round. Your swimsuit is an investment in your style and comfort—treat it well, and it will return the favor.
